This recorded training session forms part of the Dyslexia Advocates Fellowship Programme 2026 and provides a grounded, context-aware introduction to neurodiversity, with a specific focus on African social and education systems.
Facilitated by Esther Muchiri, the session moves beyond trend-driven language to examine what neurodiversity is, what it is not, and where dyslexia fits within the broader neurodiversity framework. It addresses common misconceptions, policy and classroom gaps, and the risks of oversimplified narratives that weaken advocacy and inclusive education efforts.
In this training, you will learn:
What neurodiversity means—and why there is no single “normal” brain
The difference between neurotypical and neurodivergent
How dyslexia fits within the neurodiversity framework
How African cultural, social, and educational contexts shape lived experience
Why deficit-based and medical models limit meaningful inclusion
The dangers of trend-driven and over-generalised language in policy and advocacy
What credible, context-aware inclusive education actually requires
This session is designed for education advocates, teachers, policymakers, researchers, parents, and organisations working to strengthen inclusive education and learning-difference awareness across Africa.
