This Christmas didn't arrive neatly wrapped.
It brought deep joy -- life on the acreage with Owen and Jasmine, the animals, the quiet moments that remind me how much beauty still surrounds us.
And it brought heartache.
My adult daughter is moving more than 2 hours away, making already-hard visits even harder.
My son -- gone for a year and a half -- showed up briefly. One hour. Thin. Anxious. Carrying the weight of a life tangled in drugs and alcohol. I saw guilt, sadness, and a struggle I can't fix, no matter how much I love him.
With estrangement from extended family and my children either moving further away or struggling, this season has left me heartsick and helpless -- yet deeply thankful for what I do have.
