MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and MSSA (Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus) are both types of the same bacteria, but MRSA is resistant to certain antibiotics, which can make it harder to treat. Despite MRSA sometimes being more aggressive or causing more complications, it doesn’t look any different from MSSA on the surface. The symptoms—like skin infections, boils, or redness—can be exactly the same.
The only way to know if someone has MRSA rather than MSSA is through a lab test. This test checks how the bacteria respond to antibiotics, helping doctors choose the right treatment. Without it, there's no way to tell just by looking.
