Religion Does Not Save | A Job Series | Part 40
Job 25:1-6
Bildad speaks about mankind’s inability to be right before God. The whole problem with the religions of the world is that they think that they can make themselves acceptable to God. If only they try hard enough, if only their good deeds outweigh their bad ones, then maybe God will pardon them. If they can give enough alms, fast enough times, discipline their bodies enough, then, they think, maybe God will have mercy.
The whole problem with this idea is that it fails to realize the innumerable sin of mankind and the holiness of God. You may not be able to count your sin, but God can. You may not catch every idle word, yet God does. It is hopeless to work your way to God. It is wicked to proclaim your self-righteousness before a holy God. It comes from the pride of man, and God opposes the proud.
Our only hope in Salvation is found in Jesus Christ. The only way we will ever come to the conclusion of our absolute need for Him is to know Him and to know ourselves. Bildad, here, paints this grand picture of the infinite difference between man and God. (Job 25:1)
Dominion belongs to God (v.2)
He reigns forever without end. He has no equal nor rival. No one can measure up to the Almighty God. It is with Him; it is His very nature to rule over all of His creation. (Revelation 1:4-8)
Fear, dread, terror, awe, respect. Call it what you will. God is worthy to be feared!
His power demands it. His knowledge creates it. His holiness brings it.
The more you fix your eyes on Christ, the more you will fear Him, the more you will love Him, and the more you will trust Him. (Deuteronomy 10:12-22) and (Psalm 86:8-13)
God’s armies are mighty, yet He does not need them. His legion of angels are many and powerful, yet His own power is infinitely greater. His light, His eyes, are upon all of His creation. The wicked man may do his wickedness in the cloak of night, yet God sees them as though a spotlight were upon them. (Job 25:3)
How can man be justified with God? How can he be clean before a holy God?
The most important question to ever be asked. In light of all our evil and wrong doings, how can we be right with God? We all suffer from the fall of our first representative, namely Adam. Our very heritage condemns us before God. We cannot be right with God because of our nature. All mankind is born in sin, and every individual participates in sin. (v.4)
The moon is as nothing. The stars, in all their might and light, are but dull in the light of God’s holiness. Compared to God, all things are as unclean and filthy. In light of His holiness, nothing else compares. (v.5)
If these great creations are as filthy in God’s eyes, how much more the man who sins against Him. Mankind, in its abundance of sin, is as a worm before God. Utterly helpless and unclean. Groveling in the dirt before God. (v.6)
Tell me how your religion saves you. Tell me how your works justify you. Tell me how you can be clean in the sight of this Holy God of the universe on your own accord.
It is impossible! Take the example of Peter in Luke 5:6-8
Come to Christ. The One whose blood washes away our sin. The One who cleanses us of all unrighteousness. The One who clothes us with His perfect righteousness.
Luke 2:14 - Peace
Always remember that you're not alone and that God loves you!
