Creation Proves a Creator | A Job Series | Part 41
Job 26:1-14
It is good to note that Job makes these bold statements without the knowledge of our present day. He has no images from space, and he does not have the luxury of modern technology. (Roughly 2000 BC), so close to 4000 years ago.
Job acknowledges what Bildad says as true. However, he seems to imply that this is common knowledge. Even the simple know such truths. Therefore, Bildad’s words have not helped Job. They have not assisted Job in understanding his circumstance in light of God’s sovereignty. (v.1-4)
Sometimes, it is best to remain silent with a grieving friend. Mourn and weep with one another. While declaring the glories of God ought to raise a brother up, there can be great comfort in silence.
I believe this points to the importance of preaching Christ crucified. The Christian faith is not just a string of arguments or truths about God. It is no less than that, but it all revolves around Jesus Christ and His work upon the cross. (1 Corinthians 1:18-25)
We can tell the world that they are condemned, and we must. This ought to be the first step, but we must not leave them there. If we fail to preach the goodness of the gospel in light of the wrath that is to come, we have done nothing but make them miserable. There must be a preaching of grace in light of sin, life in light of death and hope in light of despair. Bildad showed the futility of man, which is a great truth, yet there was no good news proclaimed along with it. Thus, it did not help the weak or foolish.
Job begins to declare the glory of God! (v.5-13)
God’s glory causes those who have passed on to tremble/twist in fear. (v.5)
Likely talking about those in Sheol/Abaddon due to the following verse:
God, in His omniscience, sees all things. The vilest sinner who hates God cannot escape his sight, even in death. (v.6)
Creation declares the glory of God! (v7-12) (Psalm 19:1 & Romans 1:18-23)
God created earth and all that is in it. (v7)
Clouds bring forth the rain. (v8)
“He conceals the glory of the upper world, the dazzling luster of which we poor mortals could not bear” - Matthew Henry (v9)
Just as God binds the waters in the clouds, so too does he keep the oceans from overflowing on the land. He keeps them at bay, and they are subject to His authority. (v10)
Mountains, appearing as the pillars of heaven, cannot help but tremble and shake at the reproof of God. (v11)
By His word, was the land and see separated. The vast and powerful sea full of “pride”, God Himself formed and tamed. (v12; Genesis 1:9-10).
The splendid nature of God’s creation declares His existence. Yet, some would harden their hearts in arrogance and pride, and they would deny the existence of God. Professing themselves wise, they have become fools, and God’s understanding has shamed them.
God created the heavens. Reference to powerful sea animals or a specific constellation? (v13)
God’s creation, in its full glory and majesty, only shows a portion of the true glory of God. We know He is powerful; His creation declares it, yet we truly do not understand. (v14)
His glory and strength are so high, magnificent and glorious that no man can fully understand the weight of it all. However, the more we grow in knowledge of God, the more we will walk in obedience and trust. May God, by His grace, reveal Himself to us more and more.
Always remember that you're not alone and that God loves you!
