This is an overview of the Brant shipwreck. Try not to get seasick, the video is a little bouncy due to the shallow water depth and the moderate swell this day. This is the only footage you will find of this wreck so I may go back for a better look in the future. This is raw video footage with no color corrections and only minor editing. Enjoy, and let me know if you see anything interesting I may have missed.
The USFS Brant was built in 1926 for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. The Brant served as a patrol vessel from Alaska down into Mexico while owned by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. In 1953 Brant was sold to a private company and used as a tug (the name "Brant" was retained).
The ship sank in 1960 off the coast of Goleta due to an engine room fire that could not be extinguished. Since the ship was carrying cargo for an oil exploration company consisting of a number of oxygen tanks, the captain feared the ship may explode and ordered the crew to abandon ship. Everyone was rescued and survived without injury, and the ship eventually sank. Exploding O2 tanks were reported to be heard while the ship was burning, and some of the exploded O2 tanks can in fact be seen in the video (11:14).
