THE VAULT YARD (THE PUB WITH A BURIAL CRYPT) !!

Описание: The Vault Yard is Sunderland's newest pub.

Underneath it is a burial crypt from the first half of the 1800's.

At least twenty five former residents of Bishopwearmouth are still interred beneath this building.

'The Crypt'

"the Committee are informed that on these vaults being opened, the effluvium which escapes is most offensive and dangerous so much so that some of the medical gentleman attending funerals take the precaution of not entering the vault and even remain at some distance from the internment"

The above words are from an 1840's commision of inquiry that inspected the town.

Not a pleasant place for the school children who were taught in the building above it.

Especially on a hot summers day.

Under the property, 34 Low Row, until recently Bobby's Bar, is one of Sunderlands forgotten burial spots.

In one of it's previous forms it was a National School but underneath that was a crypt.

It had burial vaults for some of the towns middle classes who could afford this form of burial.

In 1998 during building work to change the building into the pub Baroque.

A crypt was found and ten burial vaults located with another two likely to be under the building.

The building had previously been converted to a church hall in 1913.

Twenty five coffins were discovered.

These had been placed there between 1823 and sometime in the 1840's.

Some of the names of those buried there were G Lockwood, S A Davison (died 1823), J Wright, T Burn, Edward Hinde (died 1840), Boulby, Liddell, Alexander Milnes, James Robinson and Samuel Wild.

The crypt was resealed and the bodies were left in the coffins in the vaults.

Some vaults out of reach were not opened.

The location of the crypt was towards the rear of the building.

This was in close proximity to the graveyard extension for the parish church, now the Minster, behind the building on Hind Street.
