Sony PS-X800 turntable modified vs stock platter demonstration

I am a specialist in the repair, calibration, and optimization of vintage Straight Line Tracking (SLT) record playing turntables. I have written on internet audio forums as Professor Bizzt, and maintain a presence on Ebay, Webstore, and YouTube.

THE VIDEO CAMERA:
The video camera used for my videos is a Nikon Coolpix L830 with built-in L/R microphones. This camera has no provision for external microphones. The camera was positioned midway down the four platter array and about 14" from the two center platters.

THE DESCRIPTION:
This is an unscripted, unrehearsed, unedited, and imperfect amateur video demonstrating the resonance characteristics of stock and modified Sony PS-X800 SLT Biotracer turntable platters.

Four PS-X800 platters were stacked vertically in a custom made demonstration jig and their resonance properties analyzed.
The top platter is stock and retains the three soft polymer factory original damping pads installed onto the platter’s underside.
The second platter from the top is a stock platter, but with all three soft polymer damping pads removed.
The third platter is a modified constrained layer damped and stiffened platter using the first of two adhesive types I offer.
The fourth platter is a modified constrained layer damped and stiffened platter using the second of two adhesive types I offer.

Both modified platter versions have strengths and weaknesses when used with the original rubber mat. However the preferred embodiment may be the third platter from the top, as this platter has better self-damping, frees the user from having to use the OEM rubber mat, and allows the use of after-market mats. Nevertheless, some might say the fourth platter has better “pace, rhythm, and timing” when using the stock mat. Personal preference is your prerogative.

Depending on your hearing acuity and your system’s quality, you should hear an increase in resolution, definition, control, and imaging from either modified platter. A blacker background with less mat-platter induced reverberation noise should also be noticed.

My PS-X800 platter modification retains all record presence/size functions inherent in the stock PS-X800. This modification also does not interfere with and safely clears all ancillary parts, does not overload the main bearing, allows the reuse of the original mat, and no damage is done to the delicate Magnedisc coating. If the perceived sonic differences between platters in this demonstration seem too mild in your judgment, remember that very little under-platter real estate is available on the PS-X800, therefore mod options are limited.

Because of the maximum performance objectives I insisted on, my modification deletes the platter’s finger lift holes. This is not a problem however, as this mod comes with a tool that easily removes the platter using a much safer and controlled procedure than the risky dexterity-mandated method used to remove a stock platter.

This video and its descriptive text makes known all the information that will be released for the moment, as I protect my intellectual property when necessary. As shown in several of my YouTube videos, I currently offer several other modification services and upgrade parts for SLT turntables.

As in every custom upgrade service I perform or product I design, a holistic approach is always used to insure every facet is engineered to be as sensible, simple, practical, reliable, thoroughly configurable, user upgrade-able, and aesthetically pleasing as I can make it.
