NCP President, Peter Chanda expelled from the party
The New Congress Party National Executive Committee has expelled its party president Peter Chanda over alleged constitutional breaches.
Speaking during a press briefing, Vice President for Administration Daniel Nyati said the decision was reached during a National Executive Committee meeting held on 9th February 2026.
Mr. Nyati explained that the committee resolved to expel Mr. Chanda for decisions that were allegedly made without the approval of the National Executive Committee, including withdrawing the party from a coalition alliance and announcing a presidential candidate for the 2026 general elections without ratification.
He further stated that the NEC has also expelled the party’s Secretary General Jonathan Kandunda Nganga for alleged misconduct related to the amendment of the party constitution without proper approval.
Mr. Nyati said he will temporarily assume the functions of party president until an extraordinary convention is held to elect a substantive leader. Meanwhile, Mr. Jonathan Phiri has been appointed to act as Secretary General.
