Craters of the Moon National Monument Part 2 - June 9, 2022, continues where Part 1 left off and brings viewers even closer to the features created here 2000 years ago. Camping here for 2 nights allowed us to casually explore more of this park, a park not found on most traveler’s radars.
On our second full day in the park, we travelled the scenic loop road to enjoy more. The Inferno Cone, Spatter Cones, Lava Tubes, Big Crater and Tree Molds Trails were accomplished. The Tree Molds Trail was by far the longest and least rewarding, except for the hike through the margins of the lava field. We had to make a guess what were not only the molds made by burning trees but where the trail actually ended.
The crest of the big crater was quite concerning: the sides were a steep 38° and composed of coarse gravel. Easy to slide down but possibly a very difficult return.
The British Columbia lava flow in September, 2023 covered much the same area but was overgrown with grasses and shrubs. The campground was located in a conifer forest, showing no evidence of lava except for volcanic boulders placed as barriers.
We anticipate to see further volcanic activity in Sept/Oct 2026 at the Lava Flow National Monument and Lassen Volcanic National Park.
