A very early small post Civil war stationary steam engine found near Virginia City Nevada by Greg Johnson about twenty five years ago. Greg rescued it from a mining junk yard seeing the early features and potential to be a beautiful engine.
After the manufacture of missing parts and rebuilding other parts this is its first run in probably over a hundred years. Lester Bowman has done the primary restoration on this engine with emphasis on creating the missing parts "Era" proper.
The governor pulleys and belting will be the next project on this engine. Also the machining of correct Oil cups and various other details remain to be done. Lastly the parts will be antiqued to match the original parts and this engine will be finished.
I need a "period" flywheel for this engine. "S" shaped spokes with a rim about 2 or 3" wide. Thin frail spokes and a hub which will fit a crankshaft a bit bigger than an inch in diameter.
After it is finished I will post another video. Hope you enjoy this beautiful quiet running long stroke engine.
Its original builder is not known nor its original purpose. However it probably operated a small single stamp mill or small ore pulverizer in an Assayers office. It might have operated a sluice box or a pump to supply water in a mining capacity. Whatever its original use, it remains a rare example of early American steam engine retaining some of the earliest features of steam engine design.
Any information as to whom built this engine would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
