I'm Ben Arterburn, former U.S. visa officer, and I tell you how to answer questions at your visa interview. As a former visa officer, I've seen countless applicants get denied simply because they didn't answer questions effectively. While many provide factually correct responses, they miss the crucial point of the interview: creating the right impression.
A successful visa interview requires two elements: providing factual information AND creating a trustworthy impression. Visa officers make decisions based not just on facts, but on their gut feeling about your credibility. They rarely examine all your documents thoroughly, instead relying on your verbal responses to determine truthfulness.
When preparing your factual information, remember that the DS-160 form doesn't capture everything that could strengthen your case. Important details like assets, savings, property, and family financial stability aren't requested on the form but can significantly impact your application. Don't limit yourself to brief answers like "yes," "no," or simple dates. Instead, provide comprehensive responses that include relevant background information not already in your application.
Identify potential "hurdles" in your application beforehand—poor academics, schools with low recognition, previous lengthy US stays—and be prepared to address them. If these issues are already in your DS-160 or previous records, proactively bring them up to provide context before the officer forms their own negative impression.
Creating trust in a brief 2-6 minute interview is challenging but essential. One-word answers and memorized statements break rapport. Instead, provide candid, information-rich responses that demonstrate your stable life, ties to your home country, financial capability, and professional qualifications.
Approach the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation. American culture values casual, informal communication over hierarchical formality. Building this rapport helps officers trust your statements.
Most importantly, understand the doubt behind each question. You're not just answering questions—you're dispelling concerns. When asked about your job, the officer is really assessing your socioeconomic status. Questions about property or salary are attempts to gauge your stability and ties to your home country. Don't provide simplistic answers; instead, offer comprehensive responses about your career, prospects, finances, assets, and family situation to address the underlying concerns.
By understanding both the factual requirements and the impression you need to create, you'll significantly improve your chances of visa approval. Remember: facts without trust are useless, but facts with a positive impression lead to success.
