In 2014, Korean Air executive Heather Cho boarded a plane traveling from New York to Seoul. But when she was handed a bag of macadamia nuts in first class instead of them being presented to her in a bowl, she was thrown into a fit of pure rage. She screamed at the flight attendants, threw the nuts at the wall, and made them get on their knees and beg for her forgiveness. Then she fired the cabin crew chief and forced the plane to go back to the gate.
Thus began the scandal known as the "Nut rage incident" or "Nutgate." What started off as a tantrum over some macadamia nuts turned into a metaphor for South Korea's class struggles and the preferential treatment of family-owned conglomerates called Chaebols. Truly the "Parasite" of its time.
