Greek mythology begins with Chaos. Chaos was not confusion but a gaping void, a space of possibility where everything could be born. From Chaos came Gaia (earth), Tartarus (abyss), Eros (attraction), Erebus (darkness), and Nyx (night).
Gaia became the foundation of all things. She bore Uranus (sky) and Pontus (sea) by herself, and through union with Uranus bore the twelve Titans. But when Uranus imprisoned their children inside Gaia's body, Gaia gave her youngest son Cronus a sickle to castrate his father. Thus sky and earth were separated.
From the union of Erebus and Nyx came a remarkable paradox. From darkness and night were born Aether (upper light) and Hemera (day). Light came from darkness, day came from night. Here lies the cosmic mystery of opposites giving birth to each other.
Nyx bore many children alone. Death (Thanatos), sleep (Hypnos), dreams (Oneiroi), doom (Moros), vengeance (Nemesis), strife (Eris)—all the dark aspects of life were born from night. Even Zeus feared Nyx.
Tartarus as the deepest place became the prison of defeated gods, but through union with Gaia bore Typhon who threatened even Zeus. Eros as the force of primordial attraction made all union and creation possible. Pontus in silence embraced the gods of the sea.
The ten primordial deities formed the basic structure of the cosmos. Opening (Chaos), earth (Gaia), depth (Tartarus), attraction (Eros), darkness (Erebus), night (Nyx), light (Aether), day (Hemera), sky (Uranus), sea (Pontus). Their stories bear witness to the beginning before the Olympian gods.
This work is musical lyrics created for the Mythotypia Series of the Mythozoesis Project, based on ancient Greek mythological sources including Hesiod's Theogony. Ancient Greek mythology exists in various versions, and this work primarily follows the Hesiodic tradition while including artistic reinterpretation.
The genealogy and characteristics of the primordial deities (Protogenoi) may vary somewhat according to ancient sources, and the depictions in this work may not align with all classical scholars' interpretations. In the case of Eros, the primordial Eros and Eros as son of Aphrodite are distinguished, and this work addresses the former.
This work was produced for educational and artistic purposes and does not replace mythological research. Those with scholarly interest in Greek mythology are advised to consult primary sources such as Hesiod, Homer, and Apollodorus.
