Today I want to talk to you about voice coaching. I’m not talking about becoming a lecturer or presenter—just purely about communicating with patients in your treatment room, and why it’s very important as a dentist to get some training on using your voice.

Let me share with you some of my own experience. The easiest way is with a story about something that happened to me—and how you can lose a patient in the treatment room if you're too boring when you're talking to them.

For credibility—my name is Khaled. I’ve been a dentist for 20 years. I run an own my own dental practice, Lakeside Dental Spa, in Hervey Bay, Queensland. I grew the practice from one chair to 10 chairs, from three staff members to close to 40 over the course of 15 years.

I moved to Australia in 2007 and started my first job in Hervey Bay. Back then, I had a very thick accent. I wasn’t very clear, and probably I was too boring as well. Every time I spoke to patients about treatment planning, they would switch off, look to the DA instead, or even worse—walk to the front office and say, “I have no idea what the dentist was talking about. Just book me whatever.”

I felt like I was losing patients. I couldn’t build rapport or communicate my knowledge in a way that excited them about treatment.

So, I decided to contact a voice coach. I thought maybe I could change my accent like they do in call centers. I found a coach in Melbourne—someone who trained politicians, TV presenters, and actors. We did Skype sessions. She said, “I’m not going to change your accent. That’s really stupid. I’m just going to teach you how to talk.”

She taught me how to breathe, how to do breathing exercises, how to get my tone high enough, how to make my words clear, and how to add music to the way I speak. Every language has its own music—Arabic, English, French, Hindi. My accent had a strange mix of them all.

We trained for six months. I recorded my dental scripts—how I present crown options, cracks, perio—and she gave feedback: pause here, slow down there, open your mouth on this word. It cost me a few thousand dollars, but it was the best investment I’ve ever made in dentistry.

Now I can grab patients’ attention.

Let me give you an example. If a patient has a crack in their tooth and you know it’ll become a problem but you're too boring, you’ll lose them. You’ll deprive them of treatment that might not save their life but could save them from an emergency extraction on Christmas Eve.

If you’re like I was 15 years ago, you might say:

"Okay Mrs Jones, this tooth has a crack. Cracks can get bigger, reach the nerve, cause pain. We could do a filling, a crown, or monitor it. What would you like to do?"

Most patients will say, "Let’s keep an eye on it." And you lose them.

Now I do it differently.

I sit next to the patient. I make eye contact. I use body language. I tell a story. I say:

"On the upper right side, there's a tooth with a big crack. Luckily, it hasn’t reached the nerve yet. Would you like me to be honest with you about what can happen?"

Most people say yes.

I say:

"We get these phone calls all the time. 'I was having dinner, biting into steak—then a massive pain shot into my head. I couldn’t finish my dinner, couldn’t sleep, took painkillers. Called every dental practice and chemist—everything was shut.' The next morning, they’re in our chair. The tooth is split. It has to come out. Replacing it with an implant will cost more."

Now I have their attention.

Then I go through the options—with energy and intention. Because communication matters.

My point is: if you’re a dentist, especially a new graduate, you probably have a lot of knowledge. But if you’re boring, patients won’t hear it. Unless you’ve worked in sales or retail, or with people before, you might not know how to communicate.

Before you invest in implant or ortho courses, focus on body language, eye contact, and voice coaching. It will help your career massively.
