Another one of Queensland's great walks done and dusted. This time it was the Cooloola Great Walk. At over 100km in length from Noosa North Shore to Rainbow Beach, the track winds through rainforest, tall eucalypt forest, dry coastal woodland and heath plains via the eastern high dunes known as the Cooloola sand mass.
The first morning involved a ferry ride from Tewantin over the Noosa River to get to the southern trailhead. From there, it heads north through the southern section of the Great Sandy National Park which also includes K'gari (Fraser) Island. The typical hike duration is five days but decided to add an extra day and visit Double Island Point in the process. A place I'd heard great things about but was unable to visit last time around without a 4WD so by foot, it will have to be.
The Cooloola and Carlo sand blows were definitively a highlight as were the views from Double Island Point Lighthouse. I did get drenched in a 20mm downpour whilst there but was well worth the effort, especially the sunset in the bay that night and sunrise at the lighthouse the following morning. The whale migration season was also well underway and there were many sightings along the way. The final leg to Rainbow Beach is simply stunning, with it's natural sandy cliffs showcasing colours of red, yellow, brown and white along the length of the beach.
Once again, I hope you enjoy the video!
