This idea was born from the spark of conversation with Marco André. We went on and on about our enthusiasm and decided we wanted to create something new, together. I suggested we do a double talk online. A short one (5 bold ideas, with 5 images, delivered in 5 minutes)...then we would exchange and debate for 10 minutes. The idea was inspired by the fact that I was reading Think Again by Adam Grant and marvelled by what I had learned about "how to debate". The backdrop of the moment was the American Election Period and the inevitable need for people to be able and willing to debate in a new way. Marco embraced the idea full heartedly and coined it the World's smallest Dynamic Debate and we found a kick off topic that we both cherish: Transformation. This video is the result of that idea, put into practice for the first time. I Hope we can get some feedback and see where we can take this idea. I also hope that the format may inspire some of you and that you decide to steal away. It's our 2 cents contribution towards better debate and a less polarized world and a new trend in talks (Please check the end of this post for the suggested rules for debate). We also hope the content itself might help embrace transformation in a better way! Thank You Marco for all the energy, knowledge and help on recording. A special word of appreciation to you Beatriz for the creative edits!
Everyone, thanks for watching and have fun as you transform, because were all supposed to!
Rules for Debate:
1. Aim to Learn, Not Win
Rather than approaching debate as a competition, focus on understanding and growth. When both parties enter with the intention of learning, they’re more open to considering new perspectives.
2. Acknowledge Uncertainty and Complexity
Grant suggests expressing openness about areas where you may not have all the answers. By admitting uncertainty, you invite the other person to feel comfortable sharing their own doubts, which can lead to a more balanced and thoughtful exchange.
3. Find Common Ground
Identifying areas of agreement helps create a foundation of trust and cooperation. It helps to validate the other person’s viewpoint and shows that you’re both working toward a shared understanding.
4. Ask More Questions
Instead of rebutting immediately, ask questions to clarify the other person’s perspective. This not only reveals their reasoning but also opens space for reflection, potentially allowing them to identify flaws in their argument on their own.
5. Emphasize Humility and Curiosity
Great debaters are humble and curious, traits that make it easier to adapt to new information. Grant argues that these qualities allow you to be flexible and less defensive, enabling a more constructive conversation.
6. Respect and Understand Emotions
Acknowledging the emotional weight behind beliefs, rather than dismissing it, helps make people feel heard and respected. This increases the likelihood that they will reciprocate with openness to your perspective.
