G’day,
Comics Etc. Direct legends,
Colin here, James may be feeling a wave of nostalgia in his cart, but I feel like I needed something like direct 10-15 years ago.
Was I the chump who didn’t know that I could get a box at the comic book store for years? Was I the one who missed out on issue 1’s like Battle Chasers, and Batman 608? You betcha. Now all you have to do is go through the Direct website, and order what you want in advance and you never miss out PLUS it’s cheap!
Previews is a huge tome to get through you say…Luckily Remy and James have you sorted.
If I’m picking off their list- I can vouch for Absolute DC the New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke. Is this Darwyn Cooke’s magnum opus? Quite possibly, I can tell you when this came out in 2004, this book was not nearly as popular as it is today. I tried so hard to sell it, but didn’t have the words, so let me try again.
It’s the formation of the Justice League remixed through Mid Century Modern aesthetics – so think: the Incredibles meets Watchmen but DC filled with the hope and optimism of the dawn of the new frontier just as Kennedy became president.
I’m also keen to check out Power Fantasy, which sounds like superhero geo-politics. Probably not the type of escapism anyone is craving at this moment in time, but might be what you need.
Spying some of the artwork out of Zatanna Bring Down the house, I think James is onto something, Javier Rodriguez is originally a colourist who worked on Marcos Martins pencils on Batgirl Year 1, and if you flip through the artwork, you’ll see some of the trippiest colours this side of a Jefferson Airplane show. Mariko Tamaki is on the writing, and judging by the Eisner’s she’s racking up, she’ll most likely be one of those writers that ends up on your pull list on name recognition alone.
As James mentioned, Punisher: Welcome back, Frank came off the heels of a disastrous run of Marvel Knights, though I do remember Kevin Smith has a seminal run on Daredevil which was one of the other Marvel knights titles. Ennis and Dillon’s run on punisher is pretty much like Preacher in terms of gore, and if you haven’t seen Punisher: Warzone – the much maligned film, you should because it was based off this run. There’s also a how did this get made podcast episode devoted to it.
Comics International history has euro comics written all over it, I’d check it out.
I’ll get anything by Mike Allred, so Dark Age is on my radar.
I also just realised that Remy has a thing for 80’s comics while editing this episode. As far as I know Suicide Squad trial by fire heavily influenced the very underrated The Suicide Squad film by James Gunn.
Keen to hear about your picks dear viewers!
