Hello readers,
There’s been a very heavy 90’s theme these past two episodes. James talked about Rob Liefeld’s X-force run in the last episode, and this episode we touch on Onslaught, Joe Madureira, Dawsons Creek and Hyper Colour T-shirts (technically 80’s, yes I’m reaching).
The stand out pick for me surprisingly was Onslaught, I’ve never read it. Everything I know about onslaught was either through the first Marvel VS Capcom game or through the hype generator that was Wizard magazine. Joe Madureira was not on my radar until Battle Chasers came out, and he was touted as America’s answer to manga…times have certainly changed.
I did recently re-read the Bastion comics starring Iceman, as I was watching X-men 97, and those writers must have been paid per word – because those expository narration rectangles were so overwritten! What I do appreciate about X-men comics though, is how soapy they got, it’s basically Home & Away and Neighbours…but mutants.Gail Simone’s run on Uncanny X-men also piqued my interest, just on name alone, for my money she probably had the best run on Wonder Woman in that characters history, and she usually builds up team books to a high standard (see birds of prey).
Madeline Pryor is Jean Grey’s clone that Sinestro created while Scott and Jean were on their honeymoon. When Jean cames back (face slap), Madeline Pryor goes berserk and becomes the Goblin Queen.
The Shining book from Taschen would of course appeal to me, as I write all work and no play makes Colin a dull boy on my overlook hotel rug I got through Mondo.
While we’re in the horror section, Stay out of the Woods by Joe Pruett and Butch Guice certainly has my attention – It also seems as if the magazine format is becoming the norm for adult content, or it could be a nostalgic play for those who used to read Heavy Metal and 2000AD comics.
I am lucky enough to own a copy of Batman Elmer Fudd as well, and glad to see it get a deluxe version, particularly because Lee Weeks was at the height of his power at the time. He’s been around for 30 years, but his art is workmanlike – a cross between Joe Kubert and David Mazzuchielli.
I think I’ve gushed enough –
As always, thanks for watching, and please continue to share, like or subscribe. Or all three!
-Colin
