On January 16, three B-52s launched from Castle Air Force Base, California, on an around the world mission to show the flag and demonstrate the capabilities of the United States Air Force. This nonstop flight, codenamed POWER FLITE and led by Maj. Gen. Archie J. Old, Jr., Fifteenth Air Force's third commander at March, concluded at March Air Force Base 45 hours, 19 minutes later. The aircraft had flown the 23,538 statute miles, almost halving the previous record of 90 hours, with in-flight refueling from March's tankers and others around the world.
So significant was this flight, both as a show of force in a time of Middle East conflicts and international tensions and as an aviation feat, that Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, Commander-in-chief of Strategic Air Command presented each B-52 crewman with the Distinguished Flying Cross. While the tanker crews did not receive similar medals, their contributions to the success of POWER FLITE has never been disputed nor forgotten.
