Chancellor backs plans for Old Trafford redevelopment to boost growth

Описание: Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared Government support for the redevelopment of the area around Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, as she also backed a third runway at Heathrow Airport.

It comes as the government looks to go “further and faster” on growth.

She said: “The Government is also backing Andy Burnham’s plans for the redevelopment of Old Trafford, which promises to create new housing and commercial development around a new stadium to drive regeneration and growth in the area.”

Plans being discussed include redeveloping the current stadium or building a new ground, which could hold 100,000 fans.

Redevelopment of the current Old Trafford site could increase capacity to 87,000.

A taskforce, chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe, is looking at the options for the project.

52 per cent of fans surveyed over the plans were in favour of a new-build stadium, the task force has reported.

Manchester United have said they will decide on its preferred option “ahead of the summer”.

In a wide-ranging speech in Oxford on Wednesday on her measures to boost Britain’s flagging economy, Rachel Reeves said the case for a third runway at Heathrow Airport was “stronger than ever”.
