Indian-origin attorney Neal Katyal has emerged as a key figure after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down former President Donald Trump’s tariffs as illegal. Trump had imposed tariffs on India and several other countries under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Arguing before a 9-judge bench, Katyal contended that the law does not grant the President authority to impose sweeping trade tariffs. In a 6–3 majority decision, the Court ruled the tariffs unlawful.
