"Like an Angel Passing Through My Room" closes The Visitors with a haunting stillness unlike anything else in ABBA’s catalogue. Sung solely by Anni‑Frid Lyngstad, it is the only ABBA track to feature just one vocalist, her voice floating over sparse synthesised strings, a delicate music‑box motif, and the soft tick of a clock. The lyrics evoke solitude, memory, and the passage of time, as the narrator sits alone in the twilight, recalling moments of love and loss that feel as fleeting as an angel’s visit. Its minimal arrangement and dream‑like atmosphere give it an almost cinematic quality, leaving the listener in a state of quiet reflection as the album fades to black.
Work on the song began in May 1981 under the working title "Twinkle, Twinkle", later becoming "Another Morning Without You" and then "An Angel Walked Through My Room". At one stage it was re‑imagined as a disco track, but the idea was abandoned for sounding too similar to "Lay All Your Love on Me". Early versions featured both Agnetha and Frida, but the final take was stripped back to Frida alone, creating an intimate, almost confessional tone. The ticking clock was produced using Benny Andersson’s MiniMoog, and the song’s ethereal mood even inspired elements of the album’s cover design. In 2011, BBC Radio 4 aired a drama‑documentary named after the track, featuring a rare interview with Frida reflecting on her life and the song’s meaning. Benny has called it one of the best pieces he and Björn ever wrote, though he remains unsure if the final version is the definitive one, while Agnetha once described listening to it as “waiting for something that never comes.”
