The Belém Tower (Torre de Belém), located on the Tagus River in Lisbon, was built between 1514 and 1520 during the reign of Manuel I of Portugal as part of a defense system guarding the entrance to the city’s harbor.
Designed by military architect Francisco de Arruda, the tower is a prime example of the ornate Manueline style, incorporating maritime motifs that reflect Portugal’s Age of Discoveries.
Originally constructed on a small island in the river (it now stands near the shore due to changes in the river’s course), the tower served both as a fortress and a ceremonial gateway for explorers departing on voyages to Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
Over the centuries it functioned as a customs house, telegraph station, and even a prison, and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks.
