Did you see rain pop up out of nowhere today on your radar app over northern Virginia… even though it was still raining in the DMW area? Not magic. Not a conspiracy. Just Doppler radar geometry.
When you’re viewing the Dover, Delaware radar at longer range, the radar beam is tilted above the horizon and can overshoot shallow/low-level rain, making it look like there’s a “dry shield” until it suddenly appears closer in. Switching to the Sterling, VA radar gives a much better view for the DMV / National Capital Region.
Want a quick series on how to interpret weather radar apps (tilt angles, reflectivity vs. velocity, common radar artifacts, etc.)?
