If you saw a sea otter, seal, or whale in distress would you know what to do? Would you know what to look for and how to help? And what happens after the initial rescue? Well here is everything you need to know about the essentials of how rescue, rehabilitation, and release works.
I am a marine biologist who has spent over a decade working with rescued seals, sea lions, and sea otters. While it is a common misconception that zoos and aquariums determine whether or not to release an animal, that decision is entirely up to federal agencies such as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada or the NOAA in the US. Biologists at these agencies use a lot of different factors to determine whether or not an animal can be released. Mostly, whether or not the animal has the skills to survive in the wild and whether or not releasing the animal would pose a risk on wild populations.
All the sea otters that appear in my videos were rescued after being abandoned or separated from their mothers. Normally, sea otter pups will spend six to seven months with their moms who teach them important survival skills such as foraging for food, avoiding predators, and how to groom their incredibly dense fur coat. Since the otters in my videos were all separated from their mothers before they could learn these skills, the DFO and the NOAA deemed them non-releasable as they would be unlikely to survive in the wild.
But that's okay! Sea otters such as Joey, Taz, Quatse, and Katmai have all gone on to live healthy and vibrant lives under human care where everyday they inspire thousands to care about ocean conservation and the survival of their incredible species.
