The Kotte Perahera, an annual pageant held at the Kotte Raja Maha Viharaya, is a vibrant cultural and religious event with deep historical roots, originally started in 1415 by King Parakramabahu VI to honor the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha.
Historical Significance
• Ancient Origins: The procession was first initiated during the peak of the Kotte Kingdom, when the capital housed the Sacred Tooth Relic. This era is considered a golden age for Sinhala literature and culture.
• A Temporary Halt and Revival: Following the collapse of the Kotte Kingdom and the arrival of the Portuguese, the procession ceased for a significant period. It was eventually revived in 1901 by Ven. Embulgama Wimalatissa Thero, restoring a cherished tradition.
• A Symbol of Heritage: Today, the Perahera evokes a sense of national pride and devotion, connecting modern Sri Lanka with its rich, ancient past.
