“Using Math in Plant Science”
This talk covers Dr. Holloway's work at BCIT over the past twenty years to understand the chemical mechanisms involved in controlling plant shapes as they develop. This combines mathematical representations of chemical reactions and flow between cells with laboratory experiments. This work includes discoveries in the formation of the vascular system in leaves and in the control of the size of the stem cell region in developing shoots and how that affects leaf positioning, particularly in conifers such as spruce trees.
Keywords: mathematical modelling; plant growth; plant development; biological pattern formation; mathematical biology; leaf vasculature; conifers; Turing reaction-diffusion
