"Yes, thank you very much for the invitation, for the opportunity to come together here today. And even in the lead-up to this film screening, it became clear what this is really about: bringing people together, engaging in conversation, staying in dialogue. And encountering each other not only in our pain, but also in our strength. And the fact that this film is called Rulebreakers, and that Afghan women had to become rulebreakers to be noticed and heard, shows how alarming and desolate the state of our society is. And I am very, very grateful that we have the opportunity to show this film today, not only to show the vulnerability and the pain and the challenges, but also the strength of Afghan women. [❌️ 01:33 - 01:38 missing] Actually, it's nothing but air, because we haven't kept the promise we made. We have failed miserably as a global community, and I say this quite openly, including as the German Government. Because while these women are fighting for their self-determination and freedom, standing up for self-determination and the right to life, it is about nothing more and nothing less than the fact that these women, these girls and women in Afghanistan, have been deprived of their connection to the world, just because they are women, because they are girls. And what our Government is responding to this is that it is making the perpetrators to active partners in cooperation. That means, while we are standing here, embassies are being raided, so to speak, by Taliban representatives, with sensitive data on Afghans worldwide. And we have basically thrown them in front of the bus, the people from Afghanistan. The local staff. Those who upheld universal rights of freedom and education. And the fact that we are deporting these people from here is shameful!
Ever since the genocide against the Yazidis began, we know what pain feels like, and we also know what it feels like when this pain is not even seen, when it is overlooked, when it is not considered important enough because you are Yazidi, because you are Kurdish, because you are Iranian, or because you are Afghan.
And it is important to restore these spaces, which is why we want to focus on the courageous women of Afghanistan, who should not actually have to be courageous, because this is about self-determination and the right to life! We currently have a situation where many Afghan women are taking their own lives because they no longer have this connection to the world. And people who lack prospects for the future also lack hope.
And the fact that these women are not allowed to be treated by doctors because they are men, but are also no longer allowed to become doctors themselves, shows that it is a slow death, and we share responsibility for that. We should not pretend that we have nothing to do with this, but rather that we have actively contributed to it with our current policies. And as long as hawar exists, we will do everything we can to be your representatives. And that is why we have come together here today.
And that's why I want to thank everyone who is here today, especially the Afghan men and women. And I also think it's very important to remember the Afghan men who risk everything by standing alongside women and fighting with them against the Taliban. It's important to express this again and make it clear once more, especially in the current climate we have in Germany. We experienced this very concretely with our women's shelters in Kabul. We know what it means to fight for women's and children's rights in Afghanistan these days.
And that's why I wish you much enjoyment now—I want to say that quite deliberately—but also much strength for this film. And please leave the cinema with a mission! That we can no longer look away, and that we must stand up for women like Sadaf and Roya, and all the women, and Dila and Trina, and all those sitting here. Because it's about all of us. It's not just about the women from Afghanistan. It's about our credibility; the breach of trust is here, not in Afghanistan. Thank you all for coming."
