Ventura Boulevard: A Sunset Drive
Calabasas / Woodland Hills / Tarzana / Encino / Sherman Oaks / Studio City
Episode 353
"Free Fallin'" is the opening track from Tom Petty's debut solo album, Full Moon Fever (1989).
The song and accompanying music video paint a vivid picture of Los Angeles, that for many, was the first insight into life in Southern California.
The lyrics “All the vampires, walkin’ through the valley, move west down Ventura Boulevard” was inspired by shadowy looking people lurking in the periphery that Petty noticed while driving around.
Ventura Boulevard is roughly 18 miles long, running west-to-east through the San Fernando Valley, passing through Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks, and Studio City, before becoming Cahuenga Boulevard towards Hollywood.
While plenty has changed along Ventura Boulevard since 1989, if you look hard enough, vampires can still be found along the fringe.
