Sectional charts can look like a colorful puzzle until you know what each symbol really means. One of the most common ones that trips up new pilots? That dashed magenta line. (This screenshot is of KSSI, one of my favorite airports to fly in to)
The answer: ✅ D) Class E airspace starting at the surface.
This indicates controlled airspace that begins right at the ground instead of the typical 700 or 1,200 feet AGL. You’ll often see it around busier, smaller airports without a control tower, where IFR procedures are still active.
