Описание: Toumani Doumbia, master bolon player from Baro, Guinea, West Africa. His son Banjou is accompanying him. The bolon is a very old Mande instrument and was originally used to accompany soldiers into battle. It is believed to have strong magical powers. It is made from a large calabash in much the same way a Kora is made but it has only 3 strings. The strings don't generally seem to be tuned to any particular notes, it is more of a percussion instrument than a melodic one. Of course, in modern ensembles more attention is probably paid to precise tuning but in traditional village contexts it seems to be relatively unimportant.
