Matilda and Stephen
Matilda, daughter of King Henry I, and Stephen, her cousin, were rivals for the English throne after Henry's death in 1135. Despite Matilda being named heir, Stephen quickly seized the crown, sparking a civil war known as The Anarchy. Their conflict was marked by battles, shifting allegiances, and years of instability. While Matilda controlled parts of England intermittently, Stephen retained overall kingship until an eventual compromise recognized Matilda’s son as heir.
Henry VI and Henry VII
Henry VI was a Plantagenet king from the House of Lancaster, whose weak reign during the Wars of the Roses saw England embroiled in civil war. Henry VII, founder of the Tudor dynasty, was not directly related but claimed the throne through his mother’s Tudor lineage. He ended the conflicts by defeating Richard III and uniting the houses of Lancaster and York through marriage, thus replacing Plantagenet rule with the Tudors and establishing a new era in English monarchy.
