Seems like the lights dim and everything chills out a bit when Nippa comes on. The silky singer has been charming R&B devotees for a couple years with his contemporary take on the soft grooves of the early-to-mid-2000s. You know, the sound that made household names out of Mario, CB, and Ne-Yo. Like those guys, this London native is equally comfortable spitting some hip-hop game as he is setting a lush, intimate mood. The best and most recent example is “Sugar.” One of the six tracks from his 2024 EP, ‘INDUSTREETS,’ it leads the way with a lo-fi boom bap beat. “This would be number 1 on 106 & park,” reads the top YouTube comment on the video, which was shot in NYC. Some of its lyrics - “If we ever disagree, you right” and “She inspires all my playlists, my muse” - would be doing too much but for the fact that Nippa treats his tracks like a skier going down a powdery slope, cooly carving out dangerous lines with ease. Those skills were apparent on his first two EPs - 2021’s self-titled debut and 2022’s ‘Not A Statistic’ - where he stamped his R&B bona fides. This year, he’s tapping into the seductive side of his home city’s vibrant Afrobeats and bashment scenes via collabs with Odeal and Gabzy. The latter song, “Save Your Tears,” is half of a medley he brought to our DSCVR stage, where he said he wants his music to melt even the “most cold-hearted people.” Consider us a puddle.
