Night helicopter operations at sea are among the most complex and high-risk maritime activities - especially in rough weather.

Earlier this month, the Synergy-managed tankship BLUE BUTTERFLY successfully conducted a helicopter rescue drill while underway in the North Atlantic, following coordination with coastal traffic authorities. The exercise simulated an urgent nighttime medical evacuation under strong winds and heavy swell.

Working closely with FINISTERRE Traffic and the rescue helicopter crew, the drill tested full operational readiness, including bridge-deck coordination, winching procedures, hazardous area control, static electricity and downwash awareness, emergency fire preparedness, and clear, disciplined communication.

Throughout the operation, Synergy Pacific, as DOC holder, activated the Company Crisis Centre (CCC), ensuring continuous alignment between ship and shore teams.

Despite challenging conditions, the crew maintained steady course and speed, secured the winching area, and completed the simulated rescue in a controlled and methodical manner. A structured debrief followed, identifying opportunities to further enhance hand-signal clarity and night-operation familiarity.

Exercises like these go beyond compliance - they build judgement, reinforce teamwork, and ensure calm, decisive action when real emergencies occur.
