Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment officially kicks off at Yonsei University

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon renewed his resolve in fighting global issues in a different setting.
Yonsei University launched a new academic organization and invited him as its honorary chair.
Cha Sang-mi gets us better acquainted with the Institute for Global Empowerment and Engagement
Yonsei University, one of Korea's top schools, celebrated the start of a new academic organization on Monday, which aims to tackle global issues such as climate change, poverty and inequality.

"Our university will strive to share our resources, talents, and opportunities through the establishment of the Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment. We will connect Yonsei University's intellectual, human, and material resources to try to take part in the resolving problems around the world."

The Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment welcomed former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon as its honorary chair.

""As now a part of academic institutions, we will try to mobilize all expertise shared by the professors and we will create some networkings with the business communities and civil societies. And thing which I'm going to focus is to foster the youth leaders, young students who will soon take over their role in the society. That they make sure that they are part of this process in implementing sustainable development."

Monday's opening ceremony happened to fall on the second anniversary of the inception of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which were one of Ban Ki-moon's biggest achievements as chief of the UN.

Along with a congratulatory message from the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the opening and inauguration ceremony of the IGEE was also attended by over 150 senior officials and experts including Seoul mayor Park Won-soon and Minister of Environment Kim Eun-kyung.
