Mad About Solar Farms on Farmland? Ask the Farmer Who Leased It

Описание: Everybody in town complains about the solar farm, the Amazon warehouse, and the trucks. Nobody ever mentions the farmer who sold or leased the land in the first place.

I posted a video about local opposition to a proposed solar farm on farmland outside of town, and a viewer who says he's a farmer commented that farm ground needs to be farmed, and solar panels belong on warehouses and houses instead. I've heard that argument plenty of times, so let's walk through it.

Almost every solar farm proposed around here starts on leased land. If a farmer decides 500 acres earns more as a solar lease than as a crop, that's a financial decision he made for his family. The solar farm only exists because a farmer chose not to farm. And "put them on warehouses and houses" raises its own question: are you in favor of the government forcing private businesses and homeowners to put panels on their roofs? Or telling a farmer he can't lease or sell his own land? Around here everyone says "it's my land, I can do what I want with it," right up until a farmer actually does. I even tell the story of a beloved local family farm whose original property is now an Amazon distribution center.
