The Story
Join us as we learn about the history of King Kalākaua's Torah Scroll, his efforts to forge global intercultural relationships, and his friendship with Elias Abraham Rosenberg, an eastern European Jewish immigrant who became known as his soothsayer. We welcome Dr. Kealani Cook of University of Hawai‘i at West O’ahu, Larry Seth Steinberg of the Levinson Hawaii-Jewish Archives and Michael Schuster, who created and performed The King's Dream, a performance based on the historical interactions between King Kalākaua and Elias Abraham Rosenberg. Co-sponsored by Temple Emanu-El Honolulu.
About AHAverim
AHAverim is a research project funded by the Jews of Color Initiative. AHAverim looks at ʻāina-based relationships between the Kānaka Maoli and Lukaio (Jewish) communities. We hold kūkākūkā (dialogue) sessions and an aha hoʻohoaloha (gathering or "retreat") on building Haverim (חברים) or solidarity and friendship between the communities. We call this project, AHAverim, a blend of Aha with Haverim, which signifies friendship and connection in Hebrew.
