In 1791, the trade in sea otter fur pioneered by Captain Cook brought two unwelcome visitors to the shores of Japan. One was the Lady Washington commanded by John Kendrick, whose men became the first Americans to set foot on Japanese soil. The other was the Argonaut commanded by James Colnett, a man on a mission to open Japan to British trade.
Their appearance marked the beginning of a new era in which the Pacific would be united as never before, from Nootka Sound to Canton. Unfortunately for Japan, it was stuck in the middle.
