🌊 History of Maa Ganga
The Ganga River is one of the most sacred and important rivers in India. In Hindu tradition, it is worshipped as Maa Ganga, a divine goddess. Millions of devotees believe that the holy water of the Ganga purifies the soul and washes away sins. 🙏
📜 Mythological Origin
According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha performed deep penance to bring the heavenly river Ganga down to Earth in order to liberate the souls of his ancestors.
However, the powerful flow of the river could have destroyed the Earth. Therefore, Shiva caught the river in his matted hair (jata) and gently released it to flow on Earth. Because of King Bhagiratha’s efforts, the upper part of the river is also called Bhagirathi.
🏔️ Source of the Ganga
The physical source of the Ganga is believed to be the glacier at Gaumukh, which is part of the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas. From there, the river flows as Bhagirathi and later joins the Alaknanda River to form the Ganga.
🛕 Religious Importance
Many sacred cities are located along the banks of the Ganga, including:
• Haridwar
• Varanasi
• Prayagraj
Devotees visit these holy places to take a sacred bath, perform prayers, and conduct religious rituals. It is believed that bathing in the Ganga brings spiritual purification and peace.
✨ The Ganga is not just a river; it is a symbol of faith, culture, and life for millions of people in India.
