Silampukau and The Wknd Sessions first began working together at RRRecFest in the Valley 2015, even though we’d only first met officially a day before at the Demajors offices in Jakarta. Since the meeting, The Wknd has willingly helped distribute Silampukau’s material in Malaysia, which is something that we’re very grateful for.

The most recent fruits from the creative link between Silampukau and The Wknd Sessions come form of these four videos, which were recorded live on 18 August 2016 in front of an over-capacity crowd of 650 people at Gedung Kesenian Cak Durasim in Surabaya, Indonesia. The four videos capture the band performing live versions of “Cinta Itu” from the Sementara Ini EP, “Malam Jatuh di Surabaya” and “Doa 1” from the album Dosa, Kota, dan Kenangan, and a new single titled Aduh, Abang Sayang.

Silampukau invited The Wknd Sessions down to Surabaya to record the concert, titled “Silampukau and Friends”, and managed to do a great job recording all 15 songs at the standalone concert, despite the presence of many shortcomings with regards to concert infrastructure and management in Surabaya.

Gedung Kesenian Cak Durasim is something of a historical site for artists and musicians in Surabya, having been a fixture of the Surabaya arts scene as it developed over the past few decades. From classical music recitals to performances of traditional music to even underground music festivals, almost every form of musical performance has taken place at the venue. It was even home to an idol group, albeit temporarily. The range of performances that have taken place within the walls means that Gedung Kesenian Cak Durasim nothing less than epicentre of musical activity in Surabaya.

Cak Durasim himself, as remembered by the people of Surabaya, was one of the most popular and controversial practitioners of the traditional arts in the early 20th century His artform of choice was the ludruk, through which he presented smaller, more local narratives that the inhabitants of Surabaya could identify with. His tales touched upon topics such as heroism, village life, mobile food vendors, and the nitty gritty of Surabaya’s urban development. He was also known for being a vocal critic of the rulers of the day, which he presented through the many gending jula-juli that he wrote.

The concert of 18 August 2016 wasn’t, however, organised to try and live up to these heroic tales. Instead, it was simply to fulfil a longstanding desire on the part of the band members, namely the desire to hold a concert in the city they called home.

The concert was opened by a besut performed by Cak Lupus, which drew much laughter from the audience. Cak Lupus’ performance set the stage for Silampukau, who played 15 songs, 10 of which were source from their album Dosa, Kota, dan Kenangan. These songs were performed as close to the studio versions as possible, and the band even invited guest musicians, most of whom were involved in the recording of the album, to join them on stage. Witnessing the concert was like enjoying a plate of rujak cingur in Surabaya: a city’s native taste enjoyed in the city it came from.
