This is the scene of one of the most infamous and controversial military operations of the Second World War. Here, at Arnhem in Holland, a bold attempt was made by the allies to finish the war early by combining a ground offensive with the biggest landing of airborne troops the world had ever seen.
The operation failed not only because crucial errors were made at the planning stage, but also because vital intelligence that warned of the strength of the German forces in the area was ignored. As a result, some eight thousand allied troops were killed, wounded or captured during the doomed operation.
