Mughal Emperor Akbar once tried to extinguish the flames by covering them with an iron plate and even diverting water—but all attempts failed. Overwhelmed by the power of the Goddess, he offered a golden parasol (chhattar). Legend says his skepticism caused the gold to debase into an unknown metal, deepening his faith in the Devi.
