This is the story of how I learned the difference between marketing staff and actual service providers in Vietnam - the expensive and slightly embarrassing way.
I was walking down the street in Vietnam, heading to dinner, when I saw her: a cute, tall Vietnamese girl standing outside a massage shop, shouting "Get a massage!" to everyone passing by.
Problem was... nobody was stopping. She looked desperate. The shop appeared empty.
And me? I felt sorry for her.
So I made a decision: I would sacrifice my dinner plans and get a massage. Not because I needed one, but because I wanted to help her get at least one customer.
THE SETUP:
She saw me approaching and her face lit up like I was her savior. Bright smile. Enthusiastic welcome. She led me inside, sat me down, and served me warm jasmine tea.
We had a pleasant chat. She was sweet, friendly, engaging. I felt good about my decision to support her struggling business.
THE TWIST:
Then the door opened.
A middle-aged woman walked in. She looked at me. She gestured for me to follow her upstairs.
And that's when it hit me like a ton of bricks:
SHE wasn't going to give me the massage. THIS WOMAN was.
The cute girl at the door? She was the MARKETER. The human billboard. The customer acquisition specialist.
The actual massage therapist? The middle-aged woman I just met 30 seconds ago.
I got baited. Hook, line, and sinker.
