The Bells of Hartfield, East Sussex

Описание: The six bells in St Mary the Virgin's Church in Hartfield are a very pleasant ring of bells to visit. They were cast in 1782 by Chapman & Mears and are hung in a wooden frame made in 1924 by Whites of Appleton. Uniquely, the frame made at this time has eight pits, indicating that there was an intention of augmenting to eight. Thsi never happened and the bells were hung in that ear by that firm as a six. Fast forward to 1998 and the bells were once again rehung, again by Whites of Appleton. There were again thoughts of augmenting and these are believed to have developed further than before by sadly, again, never became a reality. The bells were rehung with entirely new fittings.

Around 2014, the ringing room was moved from the ground floor, to (what was, and still is!) the clock room. The pendulum can be seen in the ringing room footage. From the ringing room now, it is clear to see that there is space for two more bells and the rope circle is already hung in a way to accommodate two trebles. The bells go very nicely and we had some of the best ringing of the day. Well worth a visit if you are in the area, a very lovely and welcoming church.
