Pardon me while I firmly affix five stars to this outstanding Ohio progressive art rock custom. Five long-haired chaps who would seem to have been influenced by the more melodic school of prog such as Caravan, Camel, King Crimson, etc. As with a lot of prog stuff the lyrics are often metaphorical and mysterious, so one has to dig a little deeperfor any “Christian” message, though it seems to clearly be there on tracks like ‘Fields Of Clay’ (“fall to your knees and pray, the Lord hewill serve you”) and ‘Song Of Fifths” (“thanks to our friend and the Father, thanks to our friend and the savior”), as well as other scattered references. Lots of organ throughout, frequently in the lead, other times providing background to the electric guitar leads, sometimes for a psychy Azitis flavor. Some classical guitar, piano, and pipe organ passages reveal strong classical influences. Synthesizers make a few appearances. Good production for a custom, as well as ace songwriting. The entire of side two is a ‘Suite In Five Movements’, including more than a couple nods to fellow Youngstownians Glass Harp. A real rare bear, somewhere in the 300 bucks range, though a cheaper re-issue in an inferior black and white cover came out a few years ago. Up there with Azitis, Vindication and the rest. (The Archivist by Ken Scott, 4th Edition).
US progressive rock album (1973) featuring extended instrumental organ/guitar passages, and some great tracks; side two is a complex suite in five movements which features some nice solo vocals complimented by intermingled harmonies. Official reissue by the band themselves, an early Seventies harmonic progressive / psych rock band from the USA, who made this excellent album. Long instrumental tracks with keyboard and guitar mixing psych with progressive styles in a fragile ethereal manner. Formed in Canton, Ohio by Chris Wintrip during the early 1970's. The band went through many incarnations through the years, but will probably be best remembered for their debut album in 1973 titled "Paper Winged Dreams. Features extended instrumental organ/guitar passages, or as is said elsewhere 'long instrumental tracks with keyboard and guitar mixing psych with progressive styles in a fragile ethereal manner. “Suite In Five Movements” is a complex composition in five movements which features some nice solo vocals complimented by intermingled harmonies; lyrics dominate the music but there's some nice guitar work and counter-pointing vocals; overall well worth investigation. Rather irresistible melodic prog-artrock LP with a light, airy feel throughout. The band belongs at the dreamy Moody Blues and Camel end of the prog spectrum, with flawless vocal harmonies, long classical-inspired keyboard excursions and plenty of superior guitar interplay.'
Canton band with a progressive and Christian bent. The leader was guitarist Chris Wintrip, with Gregg Andrews on lead vocals, Bernie Nau on keyboards, Ken Miller on bass, and Jimmy Papatoukasis on drums. They recorded an LP at Peppermint in 1973. The band toured Florida for a while after the LP was released. A 45 was recorded in Cleveland in later that year. The 45 was part of a second LP that was never released. The band continued for many years with several personnel changes.
Paper Winged Dreams was the only studio album by this US prog rock band. Brimstone plays a quite melodic and keyboard driven form of progressive rock with some minor psychedelic elements here and there. The A-side of the album includes four shorter tracks whereas the B-side is filled with the massive almost 19 minutes long "Suite in Five Movements". The B-side is the standout moment here although the shorter songs are interesting as well. Nothing outstanding though. Recommended for the fans of symphonic and melodic prog.
