My walk around the XB-42 "Mixmaster" WW2 era bomber and XB-43 "Jetmaster" at the restoration hangar of the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF). Both these aircraft are the last remaining of their respective types. The XB-42 was the last propeller driven bomber the US Army Air Force tested (did not go into production), and the XB-43 was the first jet engine driven bomber tested (also did not go into production). Read the Wiki page for more history on these mostly forgotten planes.
The aircraft are largely intact, most obvious for both is that the wings have been severed just outboard of the wing roots. Both wing sets for both planes are said to be at the NMUSAF, as my contact told me, however Wiki states the XB-42 wings were lost. Hope Wiki is wrong. My next trip I will try to verify for myself if all the wings are there. These planes will be impressive to see when restored. Both planes were originally stored at the Smithsonian in DC.

I'm making a 1/8th scale 106" wingspan RC model, which will be interesting if it flies.
