Episode 799. Today I raise a glass to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, and to a traditional Scots wish often shared on Burns Night:
“Lang may yer lum reek”
— may your chimney smoke long, and may your home be warm, safe, and welcoming.
To mark the occasion, I’m tasting two powerful, cask strength whiskies from Bunnahabhain on Islay, each shaped by a very different cask influence.
First is a Bunnahabhain Signatory Vintage bottled at 100 Imperial Proof (57.1% ABV), matured in a combination of first and second fill Oloroso sherry casks — classic, rich, and firmly in the sherried camp.
Alongside it is the Bunnahabhain Fèis Ìle 2024, a 14 year old whisky finished in ruby port casks and bottled at 58.79% ABV, offering a fruit-forward contrast to the sherry influence.
Both samples were kindly provided by Kirby — thank you for the opportunity to explore these side by side.
How do you celebrate Robbie Burns Day, and which style of Bunnahabhain do you prefer — sherry cask or port finish?
Slàinte mhath, and lang may yer lum reek.
