Bangladesh. There was a time when hearing this name felt like thinking of a neighbor with whom there was constant exchange. If extra kheer was made at your place, it would be sent there; if more parathas were made there, they would arrive here. Such was the closeness of the relationship. The reason was India’s role in helping Bangladesh come into existence.
But over the past two years, this very neighbor has witnessed intense internal turmoil. Statues of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, regarded as the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, were pulled down by people there themselves. His daughter and the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, had to flee the country immediately. India even gave her shelter.
But how did the India–Bangladesh relationship come to be like this in the first place? What exactly happened in 1971? What were the lesser-known milestones in the journey from East Pakistan to Bangladesh—events the world barely knows about? And while all this was unfolding, what was happening across the rest of the world?
