Presented by James Turnbull at Dash 2018.
Life was apparently a lot easier back in the mists of time. We monitored single hosts running single services. Each their own central and global state. Easy to probe, easy to watch, easy to collect and correlate information. Easy to isolate faults. This simplicity, however, was not reflected in the quality of our monitoring. Despite life being easier we still lived in a dark time for monitoring. Where we monitored the wrong components, in the wrong places, in the wrong ways and with the wrong customers in mind. Why the contradiction and what can we learn from it?
Now, we might be heading to a better future, although we have a long journey and a lot of potential pitfalls. Our new architectures, replete with distributed systems, microservices, serverless applications, and functions, often have no central or global state. They generate disparate events in many formats that are hard to correlate and level. Our monitoring also now requires SREs and application developers to work together to instrument applications. How do we avoid the traps of the past and enable the deeper introspection and the end-to-end observability of systems?
